In recent years every field has been affected by the digital revolution, but none more so than publishing. As the ugly dispute between Amazon and Hachette shows, a lot is at stake. Books have been around for a long time, and (hopefully) will be around a long tome going forward, whatever form they take, because the ideas they contain affect every aspect of our lives and shape our world. They convey technical information necessary for us to work and survive. They help children learn and grow, teach them how to become a part of the world and communicate with it. They open different cultures, show us new horizons. They bring us joy and help us understand what it is to be human.

The New York Book Society is dedicated to books and the people who make them. By sponsoring events and conversations, readers and writers, we encourage a dialogue about what a book is today and what it will be tomorrow.
